1887 U.S. Canteen "Army Surplus"
In 1916, the United States Army tested out their newest uniform and equipment on the Punitive Expedition into Mexico to attempt to capture Pancho Villa. This test proved the gear sufficient for the US entry into WWI, and as a result, the government liquidated all remaining "old style" military goods. At the same time, pleasure camping, hiking and sporting had seen massive expansion in the USA, and the Model T Ford was taking low income folks across the country to see the (relatively) new national parks. Military surplus gear was dirt cheap, and serviceable for those who couldn't afford the prices of sporting outfitters. We are happy to offer this 1887 US army canteen for those wishing to create a lower middle class camping impression. It is made of stainless steel (unlike the original tin ones that rusted easily) and features a wool cover with "U.S." marked on the front. Cork plug with attached chain. Leather strap is 69 inches long. If you prefer a more "civilian used" appearance, we recommend replacing the army cover with a different wool, denim, or patchwork cover.
